An acid attack, also called acid throwing, vitriol attack, or vitriolage, is a form of involving the act of throwing acid or a similarly corrosive substance onto the body of another "with the intention to disfigure, maim, torture, or kill". Perpetrators of these attacks throw corrosive liquids at their victims, usually at their faces, burning them, and damaging skin tissue, often exposing and sometimes dissolving the bones. Acid attacks can lead to permanent, partial, or complete blindness.  The National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) data reveals that there has been no let up in the number of this gender-based crime — in 2011, there were 83 acid attacks; in 2021, it grew to 176 (albeit down from 249 in 2019). DME Mentoring Cell is organising a Social Awareness Workshop on Acid attacks in coordination with Equal Opportunity cell, Women Empowerment cell for Students of DME Media School and DME Law School. The session is being conducted by Chhanv Foundaion, an NGO working for Acid attack victims.
